  I haven't looked behind one in a while but isn't there a "socket" 
for a rubber nubbin to fit into to support the rear of the radio?  
They make different length extensions so that when the radio 
is in place (or the mounting box) the rear is supported by that 
socket and the front by the mounting box (or the tuning/volume 
shafts in the old days).
