The black smoke isn't bad unless it is all the time. All black smoke means is that not all the fuel is being burned and that happens when you step on the fuel pedal really fast and putting a load on. No different then seeing the old trucks and busses. It should smoke less since we all have to burn ultra low sulfur fuel. The sulfur was the big cause of the black smoke a few years ago thought that all changed. Just to help you with your smoke colors here you go. White means you are boiling something. If only at start up then you are boiling fuel instead of burning it only because it is a cold engine and the colder it is the more you see. Also an injector may be dumping to much fuel in at start up like we had at the coal mine I work at. If you are losing coolant but don't know where then you are boiling the coolant. You don't want this as the left over white crust in the engine is like salt. That would mean though that a head gasket would be the cause (maybe a head or block crack but the vw seems to go through more head gaskets then other engines I have dealt with due to the 23.5:1 compression which is higher then most. Blue smoke will be oil. You will lose some oil on these (if you are driving an older one) I burn about 1/2 quart per 2000 miles about. Depends on the leaks you have sealed or not. You will have black oil. It is just going to happen and fast. After an oil change you it will just turn black quickly and this is normal with diesels. Any other questions let us know.
