  The catch is that if there's an issue CAUSING the smoke then 
you want to fix THAT and see if it still smokes before turning 
down the pump.  If you suspect the pump's been dinked with 
then maybe try turning the pump down first.  Otherwise I'd 
strongly suggest checking the injector status, air and fuel 
filters, valve clearance (if solids) and timing, THEN if all that 
is fine or fixed and it still smokes, turn down the pump.  Otherwise 
you still have a problem, you've just taken away the obvious 
symptom.  Kinda like taking morphine for an appendicitis attack.
It helps the pain but doesn't fix the problem.
