The simple head gasket test is to start, pull the coolant cap
and watch the return stream. As the car warms up check it.
If you have constang bubbles or large breaks in the return
coolant, at a fast idle, then you probably have a blown head
gasket. Plain and simple. If it's a steady stream, hot, at part
throttle, etc. Then it's probably ok and you need to check
the thermostat, radiator, and water pump.
A friend just went through this to a lesser degree and found out
his son's low profile tires only had about 10 psi in them! It was
heating up in 5th only, on the highway. After a new radiator, water
pump, and thermost, air in the tires fixed the problem. :-o
