I can't really imaging that diesel being that much slower than a stock bug,
with the torque of that diesel. Stock Bugs arent' exactly lightening fast.
However, I imaging the stock gearing of the 4-speed would be a limiting
factor in top speed and cruising noise.

There are actually quite a number of old school bugs out there. I work at a
mostly VW shop and we see nearly a 50/50 split beween air cooled and water
cooled during the summer months. During the winter months that tapers off to
about 10-20% air cooled. And, of interest is that a lot of the bugs we see
are in decent shape, but most every one needs an engine rebuild. At that
point, a look into the Lambordini diesel would be of serious interest to me!

Lamborghini is currently owned by Audi AG, itself a in the ownership of VAG.
It has been since about 1998. That's why when you look at the interior of a
Gallardo or Murcialago you see an Audi climate control and such. Also, the
current Audi S6 and S8 share a 5.2L V-10 that has it's basic archetecture in
the Lamborghini 5.0 V-10 from the Gallardo.
