[Vwdiesel] help my '89 Jetta stopped running !!!!

Hi Erik,

It seems to crank over noticably faster.....prior to the incident, it always seemed a little slow, like a diesel should, however now it seems to crank over like I would expect a gasoline engine to.

Everything seemed to happen all at once....the breaking of the A/C belt & the engine losing all power. Is it possible that something could have got into the intake when the belt broke ?

Thanks,

Brian

At the slow speeds of a starter cranking - before the alternator field
is excited - I don't think there is much load coming from the
alternator, and the AC compressor, if the magnetic clutch is not
engaged or stuck should also be practically nothing. The water pump
would be some resistance, but I doubt enough to have much of a
difference in cranking speed.

How much faster is it? With my uncle's TDI at one point it was super
fast cranking, like there wasn't any compression left at all. It also
wouldn't start. I did some troubleshooting and finally figured out
that the intake was restricted so it was pulling a vacuum and had no
air in the cylinders to compress. It spun over crazy fast like things
were super wrong. Once we found the block in the intake and fixed it
the engine started right back up like brand new. I don't know if this
is what is wrong with yours, or what if anything it would have to do
with your broken belt. I am also ALWAYS suspicious of coincidences.
I've yet to see a true coincidence with these things, although
sometimes when I haven't done enough troubleshooting yet it can seem
that way.

Erik
