Once, when I was at the dealer, I remembered I needed to get some handle screws.  I didn't think they could be that much, so I asked for some.  There were a whole bunch of different part numbers.  Turns-out on a couple years of the Passat (I think last B3 and first B4) the passenger side handles used left hand thread screws!  On later years they went back to right hand thread.  No wonder the PO had just jammed bolts into the back of the door handles!
