[Vwdiesel] no diesel flow to the injection pump

  Loosening the injector lines helps VERY little.  Loosening the bleed 
screw on the filter (if it has one) won't help unless you pressurize 
the tank.  With cranking it'll just allow you to suck air unobstructed.
  Like William said, prime the pump.  :-) Either pour fuel into it or 
you can suck fuel through the lines TO the pump (both supply 
and return) or pressurize the tank and purge the lines by loosening 
them at the pump until the air is gone.  Priming the pump would still 
help start much faster even with the lines filled.
