I was able to do the tach conversion by using this post http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3741
Otherwise Roger on here has a conversion kit if you don't want to get the alternator with the "W" terminal. Those alternators are kind of harder to find and aren't cheap if you already have a working alternator. I found a gas tach and wired it for the alternator and then put the diesel instrument parts in and it looks factory.
