Brings back even EARLIER memories of the first Bosch D-jet electric/electrronic injection on '69 Type III. Didn't matter what was wrong, idiot dealers replaced the ECU first, started diagnos is on the next visit for the same problem. I should say idiotic mechanics, since the idiot dealers (who didn't send mechanics for training necessarily) ended up with computers returned under warranty (VW actually tested EVERYTHING in those days, and if it was OK, it came back to you) soon learned their lesson.
BTW: I recently had a complete failure on the road with a Detroit DDEC III. Turned out to be the ECU - at a cost of over $2,000.00! Put in perspective, thought, that was probably close to the price of the VW ECU in 1969 adjusted for inflation.
