[Vwdiesel] Mercedes 300 diesel engines

I contacted a seller locally a few months ago who has a high mileage 1981 Mercedes 300 SD with a bad engine. Says it has zero  compression but the engine does turn over. He said it could be anything from a blown head gasket to a totally ruined engine. Do any of you have any idea what the cost of a good used engine would cost? Likewise, a good used transmission? Also, what years will interchange & how difficult is it to swap engines?
