[Vwdiesel] radiator fan

Hoping to get some practical suggestions in troubleshooting the
radiator fan. It doesn't come on and I'm not sure why not.
If I connect one of the leads fm the thermostat directly to the
battery positive post the fan operates. When I connect the two
leads to each other,with the key on,the fan doesn't operate.
If I understand the system correctly, the fan should operate
with the two leads connected? It's at times like this that I
wish I lived next to Roger Brown.
