[Vwdiesel] radiator fan

  I'd start, as you did, at the thermoswitch in the radiator.  Jumper 
the two wires together.  Goes?  Then bad thermoswitch if it doen't
come on at all.  If no then as you did, jumper from battery to fan 
to test.  If good then...  If not then fan motor.  Ohmeter or test 
light and find the one of the two wires that goes to the fan, jump 
it there.  If good then wiring to the fan from the switch is good.
Should be red and black wire but so is the one going back to the 
relay panel, which goes to plug "G" pin "6" on the back, bottom 
of the panel.  That goes to fuse #15, 25Amp.  Check that fuse 
and the contacts, continuity from there to the thermoswitch, power 
to the other side of that fuse.  
  Still going backwards, G-1 is where a red wire comes out, goes 
back in on H, which is one of a group of spade terminals on the back
of the panel.  That picks up "30 power" from an 8ga red wire, coming 
from the battery to one of the other "H" terminals.  The ground to the 
fan connects in the "engine compartment, front left."
