Hi Loren
Diesel here at my local Shell station on I-5 near Toledo WA is $3:29
Which is better than where you are but regular gas is $ 2:49. That is an 80
cents a gallon cheaper than diesel which brings me to the decision that my
50 mpg 81 Dasher Diesel station wagon isn't getting me enough savings to
put up with lack of performance and other foibles of the VW diesel. My 1981
VW Rabbit pickup has a home built mix and match 1800 cc gas engine that will
get 30 mpg plus on the freeway. I much prefer to drive the gasser if for no
other reason than no matter how short the freeway on ramp I can be going the
speed limit or above when I have to merge. I figure I will only be saving
160 dollars if I drive 10,000 miles with the present premium on diesel. It's
just not worth the hassle to drive diesel at that small savings.
My 1981 Rabbit gas pickup has a mix and match engine I built using a 9
to 1 compression short block out of a 90 Fox station wagon parts car. A
friend of mine gave me an Audi big valve hydraulic head that had a big
throttle body and the injectors in the manifold. I am running a 272 German
cam with an adjustable cam pulley. I have four into one cast Iron exhaust
manifold and a TT long down pipe with a 2.5 inch system to a 14 inch turbo
muffler. Fueling is by straight CIS and I'm running points with centrifugal
advance only. The engine is hooked up with a 210 mm clutch to a long legged
FF 5 speed and it goes well enough that I can take my friends 1990 Passat 5
speed 16 valve.
I'm working on some alternative fuel for the diesel and when I get the
fuel system ready for the almost free fuel I will the take the savings and
put up with the diesel. I have a complete turbo system for the Dasher and
that will make me like it a little better.
