I have had a lot of Rabbit diesels both car and pickup and I'm sure I
never got less than 42 mpg no matter where or how I drove one. Usualy the
mileage is 45 to 48. I have two diesels now that will regularly get 50 if
driven on the highway at 60 to 65 one is a 1980 Rabbit 4 dr. 1500 N/A and
the other is a 1981 1.6 N/A Dasher station wagon that hits 50 most of the
time. Last winter I drove the Dasher to Texas mostly driving the posted
limit and I averaged 48.5 for the whole trip. Right now the only way a Prius
can even come close to a Rabbit diesel in the real world is the fact that
gas at the present time is cheaper than diesel.
