  Interesting that nobody has metioned the starter drive.  I've had 
starters do this and it was a bad starter drive/bendix.  An intermediate 
fix was to disassemble the starter, clean up the helix on the shaft and 
the starter drivel's contact area to the helix.  Grease very lightly and 
reassemble.  If the old grease is gummy enough or dirty enough, it 
may be the whole problem.  :-)  Usually solenoids won't allow the 
starter to work at all rather than fall out.  A big V drop could sure 
do that though.
