[Vwdiesel] Mecedes 300 SD

Had a lead from Craig's list of a local 1983 300 SD for only $250. Haven't looked at yet as I fear wife would complain if I buy it. Seller said it does not have A/C. I thought A/C was standard equipment on all 300Ds & SDs sold in the USA. Seller said brakes were low, needed bleeding. I have been following diesel cars & biodiesel on the Sacramento & SF Bay area Craig's List's & observe lots of them are not selling. I see lots of late '70s & early '80s Mercedes diesels on the road locally.  I wonder if the M Benz diesels are money pit? I know parts are more expensive than VW diesels. I just wonder if air in his 300SD could be symptomatic of some more serious problems?
