[Vwdiesel] [Audi-VW-Diesels] Wheel Bearing--Inner Race stuck to hub (fwd)

Naw Val, a plasma cutter doesn't discriminate between different metals 
nearly as well as an acetylene torch does. First time I used mine after 
I got it was a disaster, leading to a lot of machine work, new shaft, 
keyways, hub, etc. Not a big deal, as I can make it all myself, but what 
would have been a breeze with a torch turned into an afternoon of 
rebuilding. I've played with it since, and experimented, but still find 
a torch is better, even a propane cutting torch is easier to cut a race 
and leave the shaft unharmed. The plasma seems to prefer to go where it 
is easier more so, and gets in between the two, heating the shaft, which 
leads to the air blast cutting it.

if you're going to have to pound on it, please don't use a chisel. The 
steel is too hard and, very fast red hot flakes of razor sharp steel fly 
off like angry bees.  MANY eye injuries occur as a result of chisels and 
hardened races.

Best way if you have to beat it off, is to try to maneuver two good 
sized hammers into the action so you can simultaneously hit from both 
sides of the race perpendicular to the axle.  It cracks the race, 
allowing easy removal.  Still wear your safety stuff, heavy shirt or 
jean jacket, a face shield, etc. as stuff can fly, but not nearly as bad 
as chisels.
