[Vwdiesel] Starting problem

My brother has hotwired the pump to the battery so the truck doesn't kill when it starts but all the the electrical devices still go off for a second (other then the hotwired pump). I am mailing my spare alternator to him so he can try that and I hope that will fix the problem. Any other tips would be appreciated
