[Vwdiesel] Starting problem

In the olden days of ignition coils and mechanical points/distributors. :)
The start and run circuits were different, a blown reistor on the the
firewall leading to the ign. coil. would cause nearly this exact problem.
(Run only while the ignition key was in the start position)
With the key in the 'run' position do all the dash lights come on normally?
