  Plugging in the block heater WILL heat up the prechambers.  Not 
like glow plugs but it helps a lot.  A tiny squirt of ether at the intake 
will do the trick but like said, DO NOT have working glow plugs at 
the same time!
  It's simplest to remove the injector lines to change glow plugs 
and no need to pull the IP.
  Why are you going to "bypass the box" and put a switch on 
the dash if you're ordering new plugs and relay?  That "box" 
would be the new relay.  A properly functioning GP relay is a nice 
convenience.  I'd NEVER put a manual switch in place of one if 
I could get it functioning with reasonable effort.  Just one less 
thing to have to do!  :-)
