OK Bill, here's a picture of the culprit.

It's pictured several times in the Haynes, but not referred to. It is an
inspection hole that allows you to see the thickness of the clutch plate
without dismantling the whole kaboodle. Clutch housing has a raised section
that allows viewing if engine turned appropriately. Very useful when you
have a clutch adjustment issue and not sure where the slack is coming from.
It's like a hot water bottle stopper. Not checked, but you may also be able
to glimpse the thrust bearing too. Not life threatening if it's missing,
just another thing to look for when wandering. I could get you one in
exchange for a cruise control set up ;o)
