[Vwdiesel] Windshield gasket chrome strip

I recently replaced the windshield gasket on my 81 PU and I was able to find
a gasket with a slot for the plastic- chrome strip that surrounds the
windshield.  I purchased a new chrome strip and proceeded to install the new
trim.  After 2 hours of trying, I finally quit as I was not able to get the
trim into the slot.  Is there a special tool for this installation?  Any
tips and tricks?
