[Vwdiesel] Electrical problem

I do some wrenching, and prefer the vw's. My increasing interest in winter travel (chicago res.)

has drawn me to the first gen cummins 4wd pu as reasonable mpg host for towing and modified

truck camper, and thus my interest in your reference.

as with all of us here, (wide brush now) i am curious of all motors diesel and their unique

operation.

while i have you here, I did a t belt last spring and while the motor runs fine, i never timed it,

just locked down the cam and pump, marked crank location and basically put things back where they where. at the time i did not change the tensioner and so along with some other maintenance

am going to change it out.

my question is, i want to purchase the dial indicator and timingkit. can you recommend a brand or

at least components i should have to use on na and td motors (1.6)

All the 5.7 used that system (at least the glow plug control, I never
checked the voltage dependant timing) and at least the earlier 6.2's.
I'm pretty sure the ealry Fords used the cyclic controller. It's just been
so long I'm not positive.
We replaced a bunch of burned out gp's in a Pontiac 5.7 (fast car,
really!) We scrounged the wrecking yard cores and saved a bunch
of money. Fired it up, burned them all out. THAT'S when we
found out the controller was bad. Left them all on and burned them
all out! Not only had to buy a new controller (about $80) but all
new plugs now too. :-P
Very strange system. I have an '83 van and when the alt quit
working due to a bad ground, the glow plugs stayed on to kill the
battery! I only had about 20 miles to get home and figured I'd be
fine. Barely made it a half mile before I turned back to the house
I'd been at! Had to disable the gp system to get it home! (Hard
to get to the thing and fix it. It was a broken bolt on the mounting
to the engine and it took a half a day to fix the stupid thing.)
I was half tempted to leave them off though. One small squirt of
starting fluid and the thing fired right up. It was faster than the
glow plugs!

Hello Loren, in this response, how old a vehicle (range of years) are you speaking of.
curious.
