I believe the main problem with these cars was a faulty oil pump chain that needed replaced. If it failed, the oil pump would quit pumping = bad. Other than that, I haven't heard of too many issues with these cars. make sure they were using VW 505.01 oil on oil changes and did them on time. These are PD motors, and don't like other oils. They have to keep the cam and valves properly lubed, as there is less surface area due to the extra room taken by the PD injector.
Also, they are all automatic transmissions, but I haven't heard of any issues with them going south. They make 134hp and 236ft-lbs of torque and get around 38mpg highway. If it's in really good shape, I'd say go for it!
