  The crooked closing probably exacerbated the issue, but it sounds 
like you may need to adjust your bumpers a little.  Should be one on 
each front corner.  They're actually spiral cut so you can adjust them 
up or down to tighten up a floppy corner.
  The latch should be clean and lube-able unless something is actually 
broken.  Be sure your cable housing rests in the right place so it 
has leverage to pull the latch open.  It almost seems like the cable 
is fastened to a stationary point and the housing's rest piece is 
what moves and opens the latch.  Pull the grille and it's easier to 
see what's working and what's not.
