I had some hood pins on my old '78 Rabbit.  They were a locking type and as I recall you 
used one of those round keys to lock them (if desired) and there were no loose pins to 
mess with.  Worked quite well.  My main reason for using them was to keep folks from 
popping the hood to hot wire the car.  I had a relay wired up under the hood to kill power 
and a key inside to turn that on and off.  But figured if you could pop the hood, it was 
trivial to bypass that relay and make off with the car.
