Loren - are you sure the manual doesn't mention it? I seem to recall my 01
saying so, but I could be wrong and too lazy :) to look.
Either way, an 02 (or any ALH engine) should most definitely have 5w30/40
full synth diesel oil. I've read that it has something to do with the
closeness of the top rings to the top of the piston - non synth oil can
cause the rings to get clogged with soot. And then there's the turbo, which
can get coked bearings with nonsynthetic. I'm pretty sure the 10k rating is
only for synthetic.
You've probably seen the other replies, but you suck the oil out of the
cooler directly(via the filter housing), not from the pan.
