I have done the Hill billy timing several times as well (4 engines). It takes several times and it is best to use the dial indicator if you understand how. I own an indicator but had no luck getting it to work and no one to show me and I think the guage may have been sticky (Part Place tool). The first time I did it I had to since I needed to run the truck after changing the IP and was out of money to get any more tooling (college). I just made sure I remembered the sound before I started the install of the new pump and then got it to match sound and starting. Since then I have done it the same. I do it on a cold engine to have just enough sound as to when it warms up it goes away and if you pull the cold start it gets louder. I have great starting and power (even below -20). That said you overdo it one direction and you could start bending rods and crank becuase it is igniting before TDC and putting to much presure on things. If you inject to late it won't have that diesel sound nor will it start good unless very hot out. If you don't know what you are doing it can cause engine damage. So anyone who "hill billies it" do so at your own risk nowing that the indicator is the best method.
