[Vwdiesel] Archive Search

I have been on the web since the early 90's, I am not sure how long this list has been around, I have subscribed to it for over 10 years.  Small group of folks, but good.

I was able to search the archives a few times, but I forget how or even if it was successful for me.

That's kinda why I brought it up... Folks in forums tend to get a little
grumpy when the same question gets asked over and over again.  But there
really isn't much of an "archive search" feature:

http://www.audifans.com/pipermail/vwdiesel/

It gives you a list of threads organized by month and year, but no way to
search them.  Granted, vwdiesel only goes back to 2002, but that's still
alot of months.  I have a sneaking suspicion the list is older than that
though... Audifans itself claims the Quattro list has been around since
1991.

This clearly pre-dates "forums" on the web... It has the advantage of
allowing folks to stay in contact via email and not have to stare at a
browser window, but isn't a great way to archive data for future reference.
However, forums require quite a bit more maintenance and monitoring than a
simple email listing system like this.

But I didn't think to use Google's advanced search feature... (thanks Mark
Shepherd) It works, to a limited extent.  You can specify that Google only
searches within the domain "audifans.com/pipermail/vwdiesel/" so you get
fairly close to the info, but not in sequential order.  So if the same
subject was discussed in several different threads, it gets all jumbled
together.

Anyhoo, I just didn't want to re-run questions that I'm sure my 82' Rabbit's
previous owner had already asked.  (his name was Doug Presney)  I've only
had the Rabbit since August.  Though I have put over 4000 miles on it
already, I still have alot to learn since it's my first Diesel, and it has
quite a "personality".  It's my 4th VW, though the first 3 were air-cooled.

Thanks guys,

Joe Haas

I really have not used the Archive Search so maybe some suggestions would be
useful. On questions I have had re my 1982 Quantum I have used "More Quantum
Questions?" so my guess is that comments under the subject would be so
archived. If there is a better way, I would like to know too. This is not a
complaint. My guess is that most of us are shade tree mechanics looking for
help from each other in this discussion group & are not computer geniuses.
