I can attest to not babying these VW diesels. If I run my 91 TD jetta hard
every couple of days it doesn't smoke near as much as it does if I take it
easy to squeak mileage and then have to get on it to jump out into traffic.
Then it is a serious black smoke screen behind me and some mad followers.
LOL But I noticed that if I run up the rpms through the gears every few
days while taking off from a light or so it doesn't seem to smoke as much.

Sad story. Two things there. One, keeping it below 55 is about
the worst thing you can do to one (unless you rod it up to 55 most
of the time.) They load up the valves pretty badly if you "little old
lady" them all the time. The other is that you most likely had a
clogged breather or coked rings. PO probably used the wrong
oil and coked up the insides of the engine. :-(
No sitting under the trees here! 3F this morning!
