So now we have to be "qualified" to state our opinions or
observations on this list?  Geez...
It was a standard "knowlege" when I worked at the dealer.  Also
Scott Kair encountered the same "standard knowlege" when he
had one worked on and the guy then showed him the buildup on
his intake valves and the restriction it was causing.  Not to say
everyone knows it or proves it but 20 years ago when a lot of
these little engines were running around, the knowlegeable people
I met all had the same consensus on driving them easy vs hard.
Actually on a diesel intake valve there's not a lot of place to get
deposits on the valve, oil and fuel either kicking back in the overlap
or coming in from the breather or past the guides.  To clear it off
there's 3 ways, high velocity air going past them (winding the engine
out) mechanical removal (head disassembly and cleaning) or solvents
which usually entail special machines and solvent which Scott and I
kicked around the idea of where he worked, getting one.  Snap-on
sells them and they ain't cheap.
To say that driving it below 55mph will make it last forever is a much
less proveable point.  Distance at each start, oil used, air cleaner
quality and initial ring quality (I've seen Audi and Volvo diesels that
make me bring this up) and proper oil levels and change intervals as
well as coolant maintenance have a LOT more to do with engine
life than the speed it's driven. Heck, my Rabbit will run at 55mph all
day in 3rd instead of 5th.  It would definitely shorten the life if I drove

it that way more than just to top the pass.  Vanagons basically do
that same thing and the engine life is much shorter.
