Thanks Guys, lowering the new wick in the round holder did the trick.
It had lines on the wick that you were to use when installing it based on what model number heater you had. I did this, but moving it down just 1/4 inch fixed my smelly sticky smoke issue. The heater is working well again.
I am still going to get this nice propane ceramic heater that Loren told me about as well, that should fix me right up on cold nights out in the garage.

Subject: Re: A question for the Kerosene heater experts in the group
I will look at the old Harbor Freight for one of the two "pad" catalytic type heaters.
The one we have is the rectangular pads, maybe 3 x 4 or so. The
whole unit is about 8x 12 plus the clamp. A friend made a little cart
and handle that you just bungee cord the bottle to and tada! It's
portable! Most of these heaters I see now have one pad, the round
ones or maybe two round heads. If that's enough heat then fine,
but most of the time that wouldn't be enough heat for when I need it.
I used it the other week on a 12 x 20 "pilot's lounge" building at our
small airport. No insulation and I had to do vinyl. It took an hour
but it was nice in there after that, even on the floor! Couldn't tell
I'd used any propane. :-)
