I would say the glow plugs will last a long time unless they never shut off. I had mine hooked to the wrong sensor and they were on for a years worth of usage (about 3-5k miles). I don't know for a fact if they stayed on the whole time but the sensors are different and I had to follow Roger's cheap tricks to get it correct. I also installed a LED lit windshield washer sprayer so I know when they are on and off.
With the timing belt failure you will need valves, guides, and lifters and possibly a cam. Also the pistons and rods might have been damaged. If you have the proof the dealer changed the belt and that it was belt related then there is normally a service warranty. I would talk to a lawyer as you shouldn't have to pay for something that is their doing. Need to see what failed though. If it was the water pump or the tensioner pulley and they didn't replace it then I would for sure go to a lawyer. I would NEVER EVER EVER take a car to a dealer. VW may make nice cars but there service sucks and the dealers have killed more cars out there. Lots of times they don't think a "full" timing belt job is needed. They will just replace the belt and the other parts every other time. They don't even replace a lot of the stretch bolts on the car when they do a job that removes them which has caused a lot of engines to drop of motor mounts.
