My wife's Mercedes with a single block heater plugged in for an hour (I
actually installed two, but haven't yet used both at the same time) will
actually melt the frost off the bottom of the windshield down to 0°F. Heat
is pretty much instantaneous.
I would install a block heater first and see how that goes. Great for the
engine, great for your comfort. If that is not toasty enough for you soon
enough, then you could install an in-hose style heater in the car heater
coolant loop downhill of the heater core. The two combined would guarantee
heat from your car heater immediately. I may install both in my TD vanagon,
as the heater loop is over 15 feet of hose and the block heater will not
heat it up.
