[Vwdiesel] Clutch Thumping

Only thing that comes to my mind right away is possibly loose bolts on
the inboard CV joints? That's just a blind guess. I don't have any
experience with what you're saying, but that could cause thumping in
that area. Don't know if it would act like what you're describing. It
going away when you push on the clutch makes it sound like something
harder to get to - like maybe something in the clutch - broken
dampener springs? Or maybe bad input shaft bearing?
But the real reason I wrote - that sounds like a bad enough problem
that if you decide to drive it till it breaks it sounds like that will
happen sooner rather than later. Not a fun thing to have happen out on
the freeway, especially if it's your wife who gets stuck. If it were
me I'd be underneath there checking out everything I could before
tearing into it, but then if I couldn't find anything I would start
taking it apart.
But I've also got a wife and young kids. My views have changed from
when I was single and carefree... :)
Good luck!
Erik
