Well, I finally pulled the pan off and took at look at the undersides of the engine.
Not good.
There are all kinds of shiny things in the little bit of oil that was left after draining it, and some big ones.
The bottom of the connecting rods for 1 and 4 were completely dry, which was odd. The engine hasn't rotated for two or three weeks, but I can't imagine that there would normally be zero oil residue. Unless it got really hot, that is.
I couldn't get one of the rod bearing caps to come off (4) but the bearing for 1 looks terrible and I can't push that piston up, so I think it is seized in place.
I think I'll probably look for a block. (See upcoming message...)
