[Vwdiesel] Clutch Thumping

Yep,
I asked a friend with an 80 Caddy what all that racket was up front.  He 
said he needed new ball joints.  Didn't sound like ball joints to me, 
but hey, the older I get the more I realize how much I don't know.

Well the CV bolts had loosened up, he was missing almost half on each 
joint common to the transmission flanges (both sides)and what was left 
were backed out.  One of the retaining clips that spans two bolts 
pivoted around the remaining bolt and promptly punched a hole in the case.

He replaced the bolts and used a JB Weld equivalent to seal the case.

No more weird noises up front.

> If it is the inboard CV bolts that are loose, the shaft WILL crack the transmission housing (if you have a rare trans ie; stick shift eurovan) when it comes apart.  Either way something on your car is loose.  It's easy to check bolts.  Fix it immediately.
