Actually, some of the old Rabbits really did only have a shoulder belt. I've had at least one.
It was not like the later cars that had the auto belts where it moved, and had the lap belt you put on. It simply ran from the inside corner of the seat to the corner of the door! The idea was you kept it clipped to the door all the time, so when you opened the door, it would pull the belt away from you so you could get out, and when you shut the door, the belt would go across your shoulder. It wasn't very convenient, and if you unplugged the belt, you couldn't start the engine! Many people wired around that...
