Remember in the early 80's the fuel wasn't ultra low sulfer. Also remember that anything above sea level will affect how dense the air is (meaning the higher you go the less oxygen). Also in the winter months the fuel is a winter blend. I have heard that winter blend is worse on MPG. Also different makers of fuel have different qualities of fuel. tdiclub.com has some good researching on fuel. Also I have heard some say that when the US when ultra low sulfer they dropped a couple MPG. Not to mention the hills, stop lights, tranny you have, distance you drive and speed all affect it. I thought the same thing on my truck starting out as I was in the mid 30 MPG till I drove a couple hundred miles at about 55 and got 50 MPG. My brother can alway get above 50 and even 58 but, different tranny, altitude, distance each way, etc. Also weight affects MPG.
And you can only messure the amount of fuel you put in if you fill to the neck each time and not to the stop as each pump may have different foam amounts when pumping. I can't fill that full as I found mine leaks at the full point and there is an air buble that won't move unless I drive it some (I tried to shake it but didn't help). Sorry this is long but point is, there is a lot of things affecting MPG. And with the injection pump, if it isn't broke why fix it. Just one more seal that could get damaged turning it around. And with turning the pump down. Most people have better MPG turning there pump up as you are dogging the engine on everything you do (passing, starting out, hills) and you are running at a more effecient RPM then instead of down shifting or dogging it up. Just from what I have found or heard. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong as I may be.
