I retired my 1978 Rabbit Diesel some years ago, and just recently took
delivery of a 2009 Jetta TDI with the DSG transmission. I would have
slightly preferred the 6-spped manual, but my wife really wanted automatic.

I didn't have to give up much. The twin clutch arrangement is inside the
transmission (wet clutches) and absorbs a little horsepower. Every once in
a while, when I slow down to about 15 mph and then accelerate, the DSG jerks
abruptly before settling down on a gear.

But in automatic mode, from a stop, it shifts completely smoothly and much
faster than I could. I usually let it shift automatically into 3rd or 4th,
then move the lever into the manual mode to hold it in that gear.

Hopefully this Jetta will last 10+ years and 250K miles. We'll see how the
transmission holds up!
