My father had a problem with his 2006 special (07) TDI jetta tranny. It would clunk (sound and feel) when going from forward to back or either way. One cold day (-20 F) the tranny wouldn't shift past 1st for ten miles (he drives 60K a year so he needs it correct). Lucky for him it was still under warranty. They told him it was the only thing in the tranny that can be replaced and it would have cost $3000. I guess anything else means a new tranny. Worked fine till he got the 09 then with the automatic again (DSG). So this one he will dive for around 5 years (company won't let him have any older car). We will see how it goes. He did notice that this one shifts more under a load and the other jetta never shifted.

Gas in the diesel is more or less something you do only if needed. I wouldn't do it on a TDI and it is drier so it can get to parts (wear). I don't know how seals would hold up either long term. Also be careful of Ethanol as that wasn't around much in the 80's when it stated it in the manuals. Us an addiitve if possible like amsoil or stanadyne.

I haven't had much luck with the frost plug heaters and I just cut the cords going to them on my cars. The TDI's don't even have the frost plugs. Some used oil pan heaters and a few of those started the plastic belly pan on fire because of that. The in line things I think work the best. I went with http://www.frostheater.com/ as he has a 1000 watt heater that will make your engine to hot to touch (operating temp). He has the heaters for all the VW diesels. I was the first 1.6 NA he experimented with and my father was the first 09 he experimented with (location to put it). I would never go with any other heater. Few hours in -20 and your car still is warm. A bonues is if you leave your heater core open it can melt some of your windsheild for you as well before getting in the car (wind permiting and how long being plugged in). All of his heaters come with instructions and pictures of the correct engine you are installing on.
