Not sure what it was but it was definitely somewhere between
100 and 220. Use something like 400 and it'd load up constantly.
It definitely left light scratchy marks but that seems to just help
it hold I guess. I do keep the marks parallel to the edges of the
cylinder bores, can't hurt.
Same goes with honing. My Jetta would only go about 15K before
it'd start in a cloud of smoke and start using oil. Rings were worn
out! Brand new rings, twice! Turned out it was honed too fine
by the machine shop. I tore it down again and used my KD or
Sears (whichever it is) 3-stone hone on it, washed it down and
reassembled with new top and 3rd rings (kept the Total Seal second
since it still sealed even with the wear) and it's gone well past
15K this time and still doing well. :-)
