[Vwdiesel] More Quantum Questions?

Bill,
The tensioner was discussed on or around 18th December. With timing belt
off, you are able to spin it. If it's anything other than silent, then
replace. I think general consensus was that new tensioners generally are
not as good as original or early replacements. They are cheap to replace
but once replaced and youre hooked on replacing with timing belt. At current
prices I'd be inclined to buy one, and grease it up and store it, but not
replace original if that was still good. [I assume that timing belt covers
were kept on, unlike some folks who leave them off and allow ingress.

I also think your head was fine, as long as there wasn't some surface
corrosion in one place that needs machining out. Did you keep the gasket to
inspect and find water tracking? Those lbft release figures for the head
bolts seem reasonable to me. Apart from the few that were hardish to remove
just due to natural stiction, what I was looking for was one or 2 that only
required say 30lb ft to undo, as a source for you water problems; if indeed
the clamping force is the issue at all...
Hope you have found a cheap source for the belt tensioner, else it is an
unneccessary expense.
The water pump belt comes off by the 3 [blimey or is it 4 (8~D)...] Allen
headed bolts. Hold still using a bar wedged inbetween the bolts that you are
not loosening, then work round. Belt tension is altered by the number of
washers inbetween the splittable waterpump pulley, fewer for more tension so
to speak....

Any pictures of your car available?
Mark
