The other people who responded to your problem are probably right but I had a similar problem on a 1979 VW Microbus which I did trace to the catalytic converter. I removed the cat from this air-cooled VW & found the junk inside the cat had melted the junk inside it into a ball. I was able to break it apart & remove it from the cat. The VW than ran fine although I had to get a new catalytic converter before the next smog check. Some catalytic converters are welded into the exhaust & others are bolted in. One good but not legal way, from what I have heard, is to substitute a straight pipe for the cat & if it runs good, then you know it is the cat is the problem, especially if you hear some rattling inside.
