Thanks Loren, that's good to know.  I've heard that shorting the battery
cables together can clear some computer problems but never heard about that
working with the Immobilizer.

Since your dad doesn't seem to drive much, he might consider getting a
"battery tender" - smart battery charger that keeps it topped up.  It really
extends the life of a battery, especially if it's not driven regularly.
