  Ahh but the Bentley has that oh so technical explanation of how 
to set the torque for the rear bearings by "able to slide the washer 
with a screwdriver."  Yeah, how big, how much twist, etc, etc.  ugh!
   Sounds like just a snapped cable or the end may have slipped off.  
Usually they'll just get slack enough to slip off at the brake handle 
end and THEN the handle will go way up, etc.
