   stands for
   - turbo direct injector 'pump' is meaningless. You're quoting the name of
   the
   - pump. Like further down the page you have for the AAZ  engine, a
   turbodiesel
   - direct injection injector pump or TDII
   -  An n/a pump is a  DI....


I've been working on all kinds of diesels for 25 yrs, and I think VW
marketing screwed up.
All commercial diesels inject fuel "directly" into the cylinder.
Old Caterpillar engines (70's), I worked on, are all 'pre-combustion
chamber', or "pre-cup" engines, the fuel was injected into and ignited there
and through a small hole was released into the cylinder, EXACTLY like ALL
the early VW diesels, AAZ?, ALH and all the TD engines and most of the TDI.
The only difference I can see is the CAT diesel has removable pre-cups and
VW there cast into the head.
CAT did come out with what they called a direct-injection engine because the
tip of the fuel injector sits IN the cylinder.
All CAT engines are DI now for fuel efficiency.

The rub for me is that TD is for turbo-diesel and TDI is for
Turbo-diesel-intercooler, I KNOW even the VW sales literature says TDI is
turbo-direct-injection.
marketing morons, if you ask me.

The only true TDI, if you assume "di" means direct injection, for me, is the
BEW which uses a unit injector (Pump-Duse) PD off of the camshaft lobe
AND the end of the injectors is really "in the cylinder" , not using a
pre-combustion chamber.

The question I have is do any of the engines they called "TD" have
intercoolers ?
