With the replacing the clutch if the springs and dics are that bad then just spend the extra and get the pressure plate and if you can have the flywheel ground that is best to prevent slipping. I haven't found a place that could grind it in my time allowances as I needed my car the weekend I swap things. If nothing else using a gasket surface prep pad on a drill will help. Also do the throw out bearing and it never hurts to do the cable. That way you don't have to worry about it for a long time again.
With the hard pushing my brother had the problem where his got hard and thne the cable pulled through the fire wall. It the brace on the pedal assem and he had a different pedel set up from a parts car so he swapped it out. May have a bad cable that got corroded over the time of not using it or it may be kinked to much. I doubt it is in the tranny that is bad and the pressure plate wouldn't change over the years to much if it was easy. Mine got hard only after putting a heavier clutch in it which I think was over kill (6 puck clutch, lightened 210mm flywheel for my 1.9 td engine). I am finding it catches so fast I am the only one that can drive it with out killing it.
