Reply to Jonathan Hoehl. I think the reason we Americans "are being craped on" is that we who participate in this discussion group do not have "American Values" in so far as automotive values are concerned but rather have European values. We are an automotive minority but I think there are enough of us that VW & other automotive manufacturers should recognize our existence. Example: The type one VW microbus was ill suited for typical American driving & not suitable for freeway driving. But Chrysler recognized the need for an American version of the microbus & their minivans saved Chrysler in the 1980s. The type 1 VW bug, in the 1950s was suitable for American needs as it could be driven flat out at 62 MPH (100 kph) without damage whereas its competitors such as the Renault Dauphine could not. Also, VW then set up a top notch dealer network, which since the days of Heinz Nordoff, VW seems to have forgot.
I think there is a significant nitch market for a 50+ MPG car in the US market & I hope VW will give us their 3 cylinder TDI turbodiesel in the Polo. Does anyone know if the VW factory is monitoring this discussion group?
